So much new stuff has been announced this year at D23 2017, from Star Wars Land info to a new Mickey ride to a Star Wars Hotel! As people have asked for my opinion on X, Y, or Z, I decided to run down the list and talk about the announcements and what I think!

Let’s start with the Magic Kingdom. New Tron Coaster in Tomorrowland announced! I’m about 50/50 on this one. I’m really glad a US park is getting the ride, because from everything I’ve seen online it looks like a really fun experience. I also really love Tron. On the other hand I still have some reservations about its placement. I have a bad feeling that putting an exciting, shiny, thrilling, brand new roller coaster right next to a coaster that’s over 40 years old and unarguably less thrilling is just going to make Space Mountain look bad. Sure to us hardcore fans it’s a classic and we love it for that, but to your average joe guest it’s an old slow coaster next to a cool new fast coaster. We already know that Disney is open to changing or removing what we consider classics, so it’s ridership that matters most.
We’re also getting a new theater inspired by Kansas City’s Willis Wood Theater off of Main Street USA. That’s pretty cool. More shows is a good thing and I like the idea of it not being on Main Street but off of it. Feels like an unintentional nod to all the times Walt wanted to build areas that branched out from Main Street.
Moving on to Epcot! Let’s get the big one’s out of the way:
Guardians of the Galaxy Ride confirmed and a Ratatouille ride in France. I already have a video up explaining my thoughts on putting IP into Epcot that you can check out, but the short version is I’m pretty much fine with it. I do like the touch that Peter Quill has visited Epcot. That meta-humor is cool to me.
For me the cooler news was the stuff I wasn’t expecting. We’ve got new Mission Space missions coming, which are long overdue. Seriously the CGI in the current ride is horrible. It also sounded like people who ride green will get a different mission from orange, and I like the idea of that. It’ll let them design the mission around the ride mechanics being used, rather than just trying to come up with tame recreations.
New film in China sounds great. Hopefully it means Canada is next. I don’t know if the Ratatouille ride will mean the French film is going, but if not I hope that gets an update too.
A space themed table service restaurant next to Mission Space? YES PLEASE! I love space. I love the idea of a restaurant themed as a space station. I’m sold.
Lastly, they showed off some concept art for what the hub area of Future World might look like. It was called “blue sky”, which means we shouldn’t expect it to look exactly like the art. In any case, I think it looks pretty cool. I love that the revised vision of the future is less… 80s.
On to Hollywood Studios!
I was actually pretty tame when it came to Star Wars Land this year. I don’t feel like we got a whole bunch of new news. We got a name, Galaxy’s Edge, which is fine. We also got some new concept art and models which is nice, but nothing really blew me away. I think the coolest news was that Rex from the old Star Tours would be coming back.
I think we got a confirmed summer 2018 window for Toy Story land? That’s cool.
For me the big news for this park was the new Mickey Mouse ride. I was surprised to hear how soon the Great Movie Ride is closing (next month), but I think it’s about time Mickey gets a ride of his own, and I LOVE that it’s themed around the newer shorts. Movie Ride was showing its age so I’m not that sad to see it go, especially since the overall theme of the park is changing away from filmmaking.
What else?
Minnie Vans sounds smart but Disney will need to price it competitively in order to make it more appealing than Lyft and Uber. A polka-dotted van along isn’t going to cut it.
The gondolas look pretty cool and I love the name. Disney Skyliner sounds like some kind of art-deco transportation system of the future.
I saved the best for last and that’s the Star Wars Hotel. I am beyond excited for this. Bob Iger, I will give you one of my kidneys if it means I get to stay there when it opens. I’ve written about this briefly online, but this concept has the potential of being as big of an evolution to the theme park industry as Disneyland was back in 1955. This could be a game changer.
We’ve seen somewhat demonized versions of the concept way back with the films Westworld and Futureworld, but done right this can be an experience like to other. I’ll be watching for details of this project like a hawk, but from what it’s setting out to be, I’m ready to pay any price to stay there.
