The Mazda Miata MX5, released as the Mazda MX-5 Miata /miˈɑːtə/ in North America and as the Mazda Eunos Roadster in Japan, is a lightweight two-seater roadster with a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Manufactured by Mazda in Hiroshima, Japan, the Mazda Miata MX5 debuted in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show. The Mazda Miata MX5 was conceived as a small roadster – with light weight and minimal mechanical complexity limited only by legal and safety requirements, while being technologically modern and reliable. The Mazda Miata MX5 is conceptually an evolution of small sports roadsters of the 1960s, such as the Triumph Spitfire, Datsun 2000, Alfa Romeo Spider, and particularly the Lotus Elan.

The second generation Mazda Miata MX5 (NB) was launched in 1998 (for the 1999 model year), the third generation (Mazda Miata MX5 NC) model was launched in 2005 (for the 2006 model year), and a fourth generation (Mazda Miata MX5 ND) was released in 2015 (for the Mazda Miata MX5 2016 model year). It continues to be the best-selling two-seat convertible sports car in history [1] and by July 2014 over 940,000 Mazda Miata MX5s had been built and sold around the world. [2] Production of the Mazda Miata MX5 fell by 2013 to below 14,000 units, due to the world finance crisis in 2008, and the pre-announcement in 2012 of the coming Mazda Miata MX5ND model.

Since the launch of the third generation Mazda Miata MX5, Mazda consolidated worldwide marketing using the Mazda MX-5 name with the exception of the United States where it is marketed as the MX-5 Miata. The name Miata derives from Old High German for reward.
Mazda officially unveiled the fourth generation Mazda Miata MX5 (ND) on September 3, 2014 in the United States and Spain (September 4, 2014 in Japan). [2] The new Mazda Miata MX5 was then presented in October 2014 at the Paris Motor Show, and in November 2014 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The Mazda Miata MX5 is manufactured in Mazda’s Hiroshima plant.[60] Planned release is Q3 2015. Mazda Miata MX5 price $25,015 and $33,895.

The fourth generation Mazda Miata MX5 is 105 mm (4.1 in) shorter and 100 kg (220 lb) lighter than its predecessor, putting the Mazda Miata MX5's estimated curb weight somewhere around just 1,000 kg (2,200 lb). The Mazda Miata MX5 will be based on the Mazda SKYACTIV technology. There will be 2 direct-injection petrol engines without turbo-chargers. The Mazda Miata MX5 base model will have a 1.5 L 129 bhp engine, and the North American (USA & Canada) Mazda Miata MX5 version will have a 2.0 L 155 bhp (116 kW) engine. [62] A manual shift transmission as well as an automatic transmission will be offered, both with 6 gears. The Mazda Miata MX5 cockpit, steering wheel, and infotainment system are very similar to the 2014 Mazda3. The Mazda Miata MX5 fabric roof is manually operated and can be opened/closed within a few seconds.
The passenger compartment of the MX-5 remained stable in the frontal offset test. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of both the driver and passenger. Mazda showed that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and to those sat in different positions. The driver's airbag did not have sufficient pressure to prevent the head from making contact with the steering wheel, through the airbag material. Although dummy readings were good, close examination of the traces and analysis of the high speed film showed the contact and protection was rated as adequate. Protection of the passenger was good for all body areas. In the full width rigid barrier test, protection of the driver was good for all parts of the body and that of the passenger was good apart from chest, protection of which was adequate. In the side barrier impact, protection of the chest was adequate and that of all other body areas was good. In the more severe side pole test, chest protection was rated as marginal, with good protection of other critical body areas. The seats and head restraints provided good protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision. The MX-5 does not have an autonomous emergency braking system.
Electronic stability control is standard equipment on the MX-5, together with a seatbelt reminder for driver and passenger seats. A driver- set speed limiter is an option which is expected to be widely fitted, as is a lane departure warning system. There is no autonomous braking system on the MX-5.
